5 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Kids

We pray scripture over our kids because it's the best way we know how to equip them for the world they're living in.

It’s no secret that we live amidst brokenness. We don’t have to look hard or far to see evidence of the fall — sickness, poverty, animosity — all around us. And as moms, the weight of it all can feel pretty heavy if we park our minds here for too long. Because, to some degree, we can deal with reality and all its harshness for us— but it’s a different ballgame when we think of our kids growing up under the same conditions.

So — as moms, we see two choices: We can roll up our sleeves, throw our hair into a topknot, and go into a frantic and fruitless “fix it” mode for our kids — or we can pray for them.

We’re choosing the latter – and we’ll probably keep the topknot too.

Here are our five favorite scriptures to pray over our kids:

A Scripture to Pray As Your Child Leaves Each Day

Jerusalem, the time is coming, when it will be said to you: “Don't be discouraged or grow weak from fear! The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.” — Zephaniah 3:16-17 (CEV)

A Scripture to Pray Confidence Over Your Child

The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. — Deuteronomy 28:13 (NIV)

A Scripture to Pray Blessings Over Your Child

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” — Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

A Scripture to Pray When Your Child is Scared or Worried

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

A Scripture to Encourage Your Child to Do Good

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. — Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
